PHOTOCOPIERS GET PAPER JAMS: CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS

Causes and Solutions for Paper Jams

A study by Xerox found that over 23% of photocopier-related technical issues are caused by paper jams. Below are the most common reasons behind this problem:

Paper Jams in the Paper Tray

One of the most frequent areas where paper jams occur is the paper tray. The most common causes include:

  • Worn-out or dusty paper feed rollers, preventing proper paper intake.
  • Damp, wrinkled paper or sheets with staples, which obstruct the feeding process.

How to Fix It:

  • Regularly inspect and clean the paper feed rollers to ensure smooth operation.
  • Replace the paper feed rollers when they become too worn out.
  • Always use dry, flat paper without staples to prevent feeding issues.

Paper Jams During Copying or Scanning

When copying or scanning, wrinkled paper or foreign objects like staples can cause paper jams. The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) may accumulate dust or wear out over time, reducing its efficiency.

How to Fix It:

  • Regularly clean the feed rollers to remove dust and debris.
  • Check for any foreign objects stuck in the feeder and remove them.
  • Before placing paper into the machine, ensure it is flat and free of staples or clips.

Paper Jams Inside the Machine

If the paper is jammed deep inside the machine, faulty components such as the drum or fuser unit may be the cause:

  • Drum: It may be damaged or obstructed by foreign objects, causing the paper sensor to malfunction.
  • Fuser Unit: Overheating, a worn-out pressure roller, or a damaged fuser film can all lead to paper jams.

How to Fix It:

  • Open the machine and remove any foreign objects if present.
  • If you notice damage to the drum, replace it with a new component to ensure smooth operation.
  • Clean or replace the fuser unit when signs of wear appear to maintain print quality.

Paper Jams Near the Output Tray

Paper jams near the output tray are usually caused by:

  • Misaligned paper exit components.
  • Broken plastic parts in the paper exit mechanism, preventing the paper from ejecting properly.

How to Fix It:

  • Inspect the paper output section for any damage.
  • Replace any broken output tray components to ensure smooth paper ejection.

Paper jams are a common problem, but they can be prevented with proper photocopier maintenance. Regularly checking, cleaning, and using high-quality paper can minimize paper jams and extend your machine’s lifespan.

If you experience frequent paper jams, contact PNPS technicians for prompt inspection and troubleshooting to prevent disruptions to your business operations.
